The 16×2 (1602) and 20×4 (2004) I2C LCD displays are character-based alphanumeric displays commonly used in IoT, embedded systems, and research prototypes for real-time data visualization. By default, these LCDs use a parallel interface requiring 6–8 pins, but with the I2C interface module (PCF8574 I/O expander), they can be controlled using just 2 pins (SDA & SCL), making them ideal for Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and STM32 projects.
In research environments, I2C LCDs are popular because they save GPIO pins, are easy to program, and provide a reliable way to display outputs locally without needing a serial monitor. |
